Charting Your Course

This curriculum is intended to prepare Sparks participants for their travel experience through New England. Students will visit important historical and cultural sites in Newport RI, New Bedford MA, Martha’s Vineyard, Plymouth, Boston, and along the Freedom Trail to the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts.

Charting Your Course encourages students to think about how important choices or decisions – whether made by individuals, groups of people, or an entire nation – often set a direction that can have far-reaching impact. We learn about early settlers setting off across a treacherous ocean to seek religious freedom. We meet the historic whalers and modern day fisherman who set sail from coastal New England to reap the bounty of the seas. We walk in the footsteps of Revolutionary War heros and abolitionist leaders as they chart a new course for American freedom.
