In Others’ Shoes
This curriculum is intended to prepare
Sparks participants for their travel experience through the Mid-Atlantic
region. Students will visit important historical and cultural sites
in Baltimore and Annapolis MD, Washington DC, Gettysburg, Lancaster
County, and Philadelphia, PA.
In Others’ Shoes encourages students to think
about the experiences and perspectives of others, whether important
historical figures like Harriet Tubman or Benjamin Franklin, or
fellow citizens they meet along the way in their travels. As they
study the Constitution, the Underground Railroad, and the Civil
War, they will be introduced to ordinary people who made extraordinary
decisions in their lives that changed the course of history. In
addition to “meeting” these famous figures, they will
also come home with a greater appreciation of what life is like
for an Amish teenager, a midshipman at the Naval Academy, or an
intern on Capitol Hill.
